Affordable Housing in Every Neighbourhood
A Vision led Council created North America's first empty homes tax with all the revenue going back into affordable housing programs. We know, however, there is no single or easy solution to make housing more affordable in our city. We need to keep moving forward with planning that invests in housing options across the spectrum by:
- Using city land to build affordable housing, including co-ops - Land owned by the City is a way for Vancouver’s Affordable Housing Agency to lower the costs of developing new housing units;
- More housing options for people - Zoning to include triplexes, townhouses and small apartment buildings in single-family neighbourhoods across Vancouver will provide gentle density increases to strengthen the fabric of neighbourhoods and support small and local businesses;
- Increase the empty homes tax - Revenue from this tax will put more money into affordable housing initiatives and the higher cost will deter speculators who have driven up prices.
