The number of street homeless in Vancouver has declined for the first time, Mayor Gregor Robertson said Friday.

"Last year was the first decline since counts started being made (a number of years ago). It is the first year-over-year decline," he told reporters attending a Vancouver Board of Trade function on Homelessness Action Week.

"Street homelessness declined dramatically," he said.

Judy Graves, the city's housing advocate, called it "really good news."

"We know these people as individuals. We know their stories.

Most are in chronic pain. To see them off the sidewalk and sleeping in a real bed is a good feeling," she said.
