Voters deserve to know where the NPA and Suzanne Anton stand on the proposed 2-cent per litre gas levy to pay for Translink expansion, says Vision Vancouver Councillor Geoff Meggs.
"Anton and her party's silence on this issue is deafening, and shows that they just don't get it when it comes to what it will take to lead our City towards a more effective and sustainable transit system" says Meggs.
The Mayor's Council on Regional Transportation is set to vote on the proposal this Friday. Anton has so far refused to say whether or not she supports the measure, despite the fact the proposal was announced more than three months ago.
"Anyone who has stood in the pouring rain as full buses pass them along the Broadway corridor understands the immediate need to increase resources for transit in Vancouver and throughout the Lower Mainland," continues Meggs. "That's why Mayor Robertson has taken the lead with the Mayor's Council to negotiate this agreement that will secure almost $1 billion in Federal and Provincial money for new transit."
"It's time for Suzanne Anton to say clearly whether she supports this plan and, if not, what she would do as Mayor to secure the funding our transit system so desperately needs. If they really understand what a priority improved transit is, the NPA will take some time from their negative partisan positioning to join us in doing what's best for the people of Vancouver."
