The announcement by NPA Mayoral candidate Suzanne Anton that she is opposed to water metering in Vancouver is her latest policy flip-flop, and just another example of how out of touch the NPA are, says Vision Vancouver.
“The fact that Suzanne Anton opposes water metering in new homes shows just how out of touch the NPA is,” said Vision Vancouver council candidate Tony Tang. “ Vancouver has the fourth highest water consumption of any major city in Canada . Cities like Victoria , Surrey, Richmond , and West Vancouver all have water metering.
“Using our water more efficiently saves money for taxpayers and makes financial sense now and for the future. Mayor Gregor Robertson gets that – but Suzanne Anton doesn’t.”
The use of water meters for new single-family homes supports the City’s greenest city target of reducing water consumption by 33% by 2020. By reducing water consumption now, the City can help extend the life of Vancouver ’s reservoirs and save money on future expansions.
In a news release today, Suzanne Anton declared that water metering is “greenwashing,” and that “there is no case for water meters.” Reducing water consumption is a key goal of the Greenest City Action Plan. Councillor Anton has voted in favour of the greenest city plan four separate times this term.
“For the past two years, Suzanne Anton voted in favour of the city working to reduce its water consumption – now she’s flip-flopped and says there is no need. Which is it?” asks Tony Tang.
“Mayor Robertson and Vision Vancouver have a clear plan for the City that makes financial sense, while Suzanne Anton and the NPA continue to change positions.”
