Vancouver City Council incumbent councillor Geoff Meggs gives us the 411 on bread, wine and brownies, his grandfather’s World War I paybook, loyalty, and his ongoing research to find the best food cart in Vancouver.
How did your past work get you to where you are today?
I met Glen Clark at a hospital workers' meeting.
If you weren’t in politics, what would you be doing?
Writing.
What would the title of your autobiography be?
“Restless”
What will your business card say in five years?
President (of my own one-person company).
Which living person do you most admire?
Nelson Mandela.
If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
Play an instrument.
What do you consider your greatest achievement?
Spending all these years with Jan and the girls.
What is your greatest extravagance?
Books and wine.
What is your most treasured possession?
My grandfather's paybook from WW1 - four years in the trenches and he lived, but died before I was born.
What do you most value in your friends?
Loyalty.
Who are your real life heroes?
Lots of average people doing tough jobs. Canadian Olympic athletes, whether they win medals or not, people who paint or make music regardless of the poor financial rewards
What is your most marked characteristic?
Caution -- or so I'm told.
What is the best coffee shop in Vancouver?
I like Elysian - great pastries, great coffee.
What is your favourite street in the city?
Hastings from Victory Square to Jackson Avenue; Pender in Chinatown.
Which annual city parade/event do you consider to be the best?
Pride Parade.
If you could name one street after someone, who would it be?
Harry Rankin.
Which would you fight more for? An apiary or compostable toilets at City Hall?
Apiary - good for the flowers.
What are your favourite food carts in Vancouver so far?
Still in the middle of the review process.
