Figuring out the best way to spend your tax dollars to build the greenest, most livable, most forward-thinking City possible is no simple task.

But that’s what the new 2012-2014 Capital Plan sets out to do. The Capital Plan is the City’s financial plan to invest in our city's infrastructure – in water pipes, sidewalks, libraries, community centres, fire halls, affordable housing, parks, street trees, vehicles, technology and more.

This plan also comes with a price tag – and choices to be made. The nearly $700 million plan invests in your priorities, and will ensure Vancouver continues to thrive and provide top quality municipal services, balanced with good fiscal management that keeps fees and property taxes in check. Key elements of the plan include:

  • Steps to help end street homelessness, fund new affordable housing and protect renters. In fact, funding for 1,100 will be provided for social housing under this plan over the next three years.
  • Renewing parks and recreation space and adding new skate parks, investing in our community centres and libraries, making capital grants for new childcare spaces, and planting 6,000 new trees long Vancouver streets.
  • Supporting rapid transit along the Broadway corridor, advocating for increased bus service, investing in transit improvements and making infrastructure enhancements to make our streets safer for pedestrians and cyclists.
  • Building our economy by maintaining and improving to civic infrastructure and facilities to attract more head offices and investment, while keeping fees and taxes in check.

City Council voted in favour of the Capital Plan this past Thursday, September 22. Now it’s our turn. Voters in November’s municipal election will be asked to give Council authority to implement the plan. We ask for your support to vote in favour of the 2012-2014 Capital Plan, to help Vision continue the positive change we’ve started to build a more caring, affordable green city that’s diverse and safe.
